40's Era Showcase

World War II greatly influenced fashion in the 1940's becoming a mostly conservative decade with simple, crisp hemlines and little to no fullness in the skirt. "Straying from the straight and narrow" became the ideal for fashion design that focused on creating softness in the fitted bodice, while adding a touch of flare like shirred and pleated ruffles around the collar, and bows at the waistline.

Frivolity and femininity reigned again in the fifties after the war with the "New Look" by Dior . Skirts were fuller and different fabrics for dresses were used in abundance to create a variety of silhouettes for every occasion.

Fashion in the 20's had a more tailored or "boyish" look focusing on an excessively slender and straight silhouette with a perfectly flat bust and back, and either a lowered waistline with belts or half belts (at the hip) or no waistline at all. Short sleeves and sleeveless blouses and dresses became popular. Women wore their hair in short bobs or as close to the head as possible to give an overall small sleek appearance. The feminine touch became very apparent in the play of details--circular and plaited flounces, tiers, cascades, plaits, cape backs, lifted drapery, capettes, and center front and side closings.

The mode of 1930's fashion has a past that dates back to 1830 when women were ladies and ladies were romantic. Since this was its centennial and women were tired of matter- of -fact clothes, this feminine mode of the princess silhouette with frills and furbelows, fichus, puff sleeves, trains, regular and irregular hemlines, normal waistline, and all the rest had been revived.
